    Wendy C. Hildenbrand, PhD, MPH, OTR/L, FAOTA

    Areas of Expertise: Mental health focus on adolescents and adults, public health, school-based practice, advocacy, policy development and implementation

    Wendy Hildenbrand is President of AOTA and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Occupational Therapy Education Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

    Hildenbrand’s practice experience includes work in mental health settings for more than a decade, school-based practice, and population and community health contexts. Her professional expertise includes leadership development, professional formation, policy development and implementation, advocacy, public health, and building bridges between policy and practice. Her most recent research examines the experience of role conflict in frontline occupational therapy professionals when implementing policies (such as productivity requirements) and working to maintain professional values (such as client-centered care). She identifies her most rewarding academic–community partnership as her 14-year commitment as co-director and faculty advisor for the Community Health Project, a community-based and interprofessional experience designed to enhance the educational and future practice experience of health professions students by immersing them in a public health or social service settings.

    This presentation describes the results of a needs assessment exploring barriers and facilitators to menstrual hygiene management and the impact of menstruation on other occupations among individuals experiencing homelessness in St. Louis, MO. Data was collected from women experiencing homelessness, men experiencing homelessness, and homeless service agency staff. The presentation will discuss the needs assessment results and beginning development of a program to address needs related to menstrual hygiene management within the homeless population. Participants will be invited to consider and discuss how menstrual hygiene management affects their own clients and practice.

    Posters: Analysis of repeated dosages of group based CIMT in young Children: This poster will depict some of the trends seen in 3 children who have received multiple dosages of constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT).

    Posters: Exploring the Effectiveness of a Physical activity intervention in Early Head Start: Minimal research exists exploring a physical activity (PA) training module within Early Head Start. Evidence indicates that children who actively engage in daily PA have healthier development. Occupational therapy may play a role to improve child PA via coaching practices with early Head Start staff.

    Posters: Use of Eye Gaze Technology to Assess Visual Field Preferences: This session will involve a presentation of research and findings in the area of cortical/cerebral visual impairment (CVI), eye gaze technology, and occupational performance. Presenters will outline background information, including what is meant by CVI, the previous research in this area, and the purpose of the study. Presenters will describe occupational performance in children with CVI and the use eye gaze technology as an assessment and intervention of functional vision.

    Posters: Grip strength in Division II College Athletes: Comparison to the Current Normative Data: A look at the differences in grip strength between Division Two college athletes and the normative data.

    In this course, attendees will learn how to create a virtual interactive OT room. It is helpful to have Bitmoji downloaded as an app prior to the course. Attendees will be provided with a presentation on how to create a virtual treatment space and use course time to begin working on their own virtual treatment space. Attendees will need to have access to Bitmoji (app) and Google slides (have a free gmail account). The use of a virtual OT space can be helpful in these times of COVID, but can also be a wonderful supplemental tool for ongoing and discharged clients. And it is fun!
